Question:

Any ideas for how to reuse egg cartons?

-I really hate that most of them are made with Styrofoam.

-I try to buy the cardboard ones when I can, but some grocery stores don't carry them anymore.

-I don't want to throw them in the garbage where they'll ultimately be put in a landfill.

How can I know which ones can be recycled?

Any ideas on how to reuse them?

  1. They should have a marking on them if they are recyclable (usually done with the 3 arrows pointing at each other).

There are lots of art projects that can be done with them if you have small children around.

They can be used as starter pots for small flowers.

  2. Sell golf balls in them.

  3. soundproof your house with them

  4. the styrofoam ones are useless, but i do use the cardboard ones to start seedlings and then transplant them into the garden...i don't remove the cardboard, i just put the whole thing in the ground...one carton can start 12 seedlings...separate the carton onto twelve parts, and enjoy.

  5. I use them extensively throughout my house as drawer organizers- they tend to fit quite well!

Not a permanent solution, but I've been doing it for a while in craft boxes, kitchen drawers, toolboxes and haven't run out of a need for them yet.  The paper cartons may be made of recycled material, but often aren't recyclable themselves.  If recycling is your concern, the plastic cartons are probably your best bet.

  6. You could use them for insulating your house, if you live in a cold country. Youd need a few to do this tho! lol

  7. don't know if this will help, but I buy eggs from free-range chickens that a friends owns, and I just reuse the same 2 containers. I take them to the chickens and the chickens re-fill them...so..my idea is to give them to someone near you that might have a farm and have chickens. They can use them to give away eggs. I've also used them to hold things in. Like cut out a row and put jewlry and coins in. I've used them in crafts with the kids (dying easter eggs) or making egg projects. We sometimes "blow" the egg part out of the shell, eat the egg part and make things out of the shells. We've made bird feeders... It just depends...use your imagination :)

  8. I donate them to my local co-op. Then they give the egg cartons to local farmers who fill them with their homegrown eggs to sell.

  9. Reuse egg cartons to start seeds.  Use to sort and store beads and other small items.

  10. Sound proffing your house would be the best one but you might be able to donate them to a school to be used in art maybe.  They don't have styrofoam in austrlia so I don't know what you can do with styrafoam ones.

  11. Plant starters?

  12. I really love that you are trying to make a new use for styrofoam, unlike other people who dont give a c**p.

But im not so sure on what you can use out of an egg carton, but maybe you cant put dirt in them and use them to hold flowers in your garden.

  13. I think the best option is to collect them and then bring them to a local farm who can then distribute their eggs in them. I've done that before.

  14. If you camp and like to sit around a fire, you can make firestarters with the cardboard egg cartons.  Just collect the lint from your dryer, fill each egg section with the lint, then melt some wax and pour over the lint.  Then when you want to start a fire all you have to do is cut one of the sections out and put under your wood  and lite the firestarter.  It works great and you don't have to use anything that could explode.  As for the other egg cartons made from styrofoam you can freeze any liquid in the cartons such as spaghette sauce or gravey, etc. and then when you need it you can take out as much as you want and then put the other back in the freezer.  Works great!

  15. I buy the cardboard egg cartons, they are recyclable. Try donating them to a daycare center for crafts etc.. or maybe if you live in the country a chicken farm may reuse them.
