Question:

Any ideas for money making hobby for disabled husband?

My husband is disabled (lost both arms) and only has a prostethic hook for a hand. He is not totally helpless and does work a part time job. He is interested in trying to find a money making hobby so he can stay home with the kids while I go off to work. He would love to do wood work, but that would require 2 hands which he does not have. Any ideas for something that he can do with just one prostethic hook?

  1. Does he have any artistic ability?  I have seen an artist who paints with his mouth and sometimes his hand.

  2. really you can make real money from http://www.rupeemail.in/rupeemail/invite...

  3. That's a toughie if we're thinking about a "hobby" primarily as making things with one's body, but there are all kinds of other money-making things he could do, I'd guess, and even some kinds of "making things" he could do too.

First I'd search out the many disabilities groups out there (local and online) and check out any suggestions or even services they might have.

Some will be affiliated with hospitals, some with national "associations," some will be message boards through Yahoogroups, Delphiforums, or Googlegroups/Usenet, some will be associated with other things like products or magazines/newsletters having to do with a particular disability, etc.

So I'd suggest doing searches for the words or phrases I used above just at google.com, or at message board sites like yahoogroups.com, googlegroups.com, delphiforums.come, or at any groups or publications or even vets groups you already know the name of.  Then ask them what suggestions they might have or where else you could go for info and support.

There are lots of things that can be done on a computer with no hands or a prosthetic using voice-activated software (speech-recognition software) like Dragonspeak or even better ones... and some could be for money (but certainly for his own psychological support too in those groups I mentioned).  There should be things he could do primarily with his voice, hearing, eyesight, etc., too even if they're not money-making ... coaching, teaching, etc., etc.

Depending on how he lost his limbs, he might also qualify for some kind of "occupational therapy" or vocational rehab and that can be quite helpful in getting suggestions for how to do *anything* that he'd normally do, including work ideas.

Some amputees are (or get) quite good with using their feet and toes or mouths for doing some kinds of hobbies too, so there should be lots of possibilities depending on his interests, etc.  But it may take some researching/calling/etc., to figure out what all those possibilities might be.

    EDITED TO ADD:

Here are some websites I came up with just searching around a bit:

    http://www.disabilityinfo.gov/digov-publ...

    EDITED MORE to add:

He could also sell things on eBay... things from your home, or things he buys at thrift stores or just as good deals then sells for more.  He could probably handle the photography and also the descriptions for eBay, especially with some of the voice recognition typing software, and handling the auctions, and correpondence, etc., but don't know if he'd be able to handle the packaging.   A lot of people are actually making a fair amount of money doing that, even on a small scale.

Best of luck to you both!

  4. I don't know if this will work and hopefully he can have the kids help him with it.  Look at the site and see how cute these bugs are.  They should sell at anyplace i.e. shopping center school football , or basket ball, grocery store, mall.  I hope you can use it and if not e-mail me and I'll see if I can find something else.
