  2. Hopefully I'm understanding this correctly!

    *  Marching Around the Alphabet---One Little Sound CD by Hap Palmer---check  your local library... Many more language songs/movement activities on this CD...I use if often!

    *  Jumping:  I like to create icecream cones ...but be creative...on the sidewalk, using chalk, draw a cone and write a child's name.  Draw scoops of icecream on top...one per letter in name...the write the individual letters in each scoop.  Child starts at cone and says their name and then jumps to each letter...reading it out loud.

    *  Create "barbells"/weights out of cardboard and have the children paint them, if desired.  Then use oral language to describe what you want the children to do with the weights.  Up, up, up...high in the sky...down, down, down then act like a clown... etc.

    * Remember that one of the skills children need to be able to do before writing letters is to recognize and copy...so even playing Follow the Leader around the classroom incorporates pre-literacy because the leader can choose what to do and the children copy it.

    * Body parts can be easily incorparted into an excercise theme because the excercise benefits these body parts.  So on top of learning body part names (even using "scientific" terms for these parts...which the kids get a great kick out of!) but playing Head Shoulders Knees and Toes allows the children physically move from top to bottom as we do when we read.  You can also use the song...The Grand Ol' Duke of York

    *  Get the heartbeat up with rhythm instruments...play a cd and allow the children to move around and then freeze when the music stops...When they are frozen, say a word or the children's names and use the instruments to hear the "word chunks".   This can be used for many basic concept skills.
