  1. teddy teatime or have little girls bring their dolls - read an American Girl book.   Read Caps for Sale and reenact the story with the kids.  goldilocks and the three bears.  Or just read the books and do fingerplays in between - that's what our children's librarian always did - she was great.

  2. All the local libraries around here have their storytimes which consist of music, dancing, finger plays, songs, and books, and then do a small craft afterwards which is usually coloring sheets or something very simple with stickers or such that has to do with the story theme. You can do a theme about dinosaurs for instant and so songs about dinosaurs and even have them color a dinosaur picture afterwards. All the kids get a stamp on their hand. The kids love this.

You can do a fun play day. have a rice table set up, painting, different stations.

Do a come in your favorite pajamas, goofy hat day, fav stuffed animal day, sharing day.

  3. well, our library has story time for babies, toddlers and prek kids, with the music, books, and videos. There's usually a song sung ;-) It's almost always themed.

For older kids they have book clubs, where the book is listed on a bulletin board and they have a snack and discuss it. That ones called "7-Up" because it's for kids seven to eleven.

They have movies on Friday nights for kids 12 and up, and game day once a month, where they play video games on one of the libraries TV in the meeting room.

There is also 'come and go' crafts, which is set up the entire day. Once a month the 7 up club paints the windows with poster paint to match the book theme. They have local groups come in, like musicians, the acting guild from the local university, hobbyists to share information. Like last week this guy who raises messenger pigeons set up in the large meeting room, and so the kids could see them, he talked a bit about how to raise and train birds, and on a cart were books about birds, esp pigeons, for the kids to check out if they want.

Hopefully this will trigger some ideas. The sky is really the limit, especially when it comes to triggering a love of reading!

  5. you could offer a book club that meets once a week or so for the older teens help keep them out of trouble

  6. you can have reading time, gather the kids, and read books, use puppets and you can have the children re-enact the book?

  7. I just returned a book to my library called "Toddle on over: Developing Infant & Toddler Literature Programs" (Alleyside Press Reading Activities Series).  It has great suggestions and reproducible take home crafts.

Here is a search page to a database of great programs:
