Question:

Any ideas for soy sauce alternatives?

I'm going on a 12-day cleansing program that doesn't permit soy sauce due to the fermentation and because it contains wheat. I use soy sauce in alot of my cooking! Does anyone have ideas what I could use instead? Obviously it would have to be wheat and yeast free and not fermented. I'm looking for some type of spice or flavouring sauce.

  1. Bragg Liquid Aminos is a liquid protein concentrate, derived from soybeans, that contains many Essential and Non-essential Amino Acids in naturally occurring amounts. It is basically used as a low-sodium alternative to soy sauce.

    Other ideas:

    Chili Garlic Sauce/Paste

    Black bean sauce

    Veg oyster sauce

    Veg fish sauce

    Maggi Seasoning

Dilute marmite with water, gives it a soy-sauce like taste

    A recipe for soy-like sauce:

4 tablespoons veg beef or vegetable bouillon

    4 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

    2 teaspoons dark molasses

    1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

    1 pinch white pepper

    1 pinch garlic powder

    1 1/2 cups water

    Veg Oyster Sauce

1 can (drained) oyster mushrooms, drained

1 can of mushroom sauce or mushroom broth or mushroom juice

    1 Tbs sugar

Put all in blender or processor.

    Blend until liquefied.

Strain, if you can't get it completely liquefied.

    Store in jar in fridge.

    Shake before using.

  2. I can't fully answer your question, but for the future if you are going to continue to limit Wheat you can get wheat free soy sauce at most health food stores.

  3. Take this opportunity to try something totally different... have a look at veggie stock, vinegar, and wines as cooking liquids/flavoring agents. Good luck with your cleanse.

  4. I know a lot of veggies that use Braggs amino acids instead of soy sauce. Here is a link.

  5. Try Maggi

You might want to look on its website to find the ingredients

    Its owned by Nestle

  6. If you are not vegetarian, you can use fish sauce or oyster sauce.

If you are vegetarian, I would try those "savor" (Maggi or Knorr brands come to mind. Also some Lee Kum Kee Chinese brand) seasonings that lool like light soy sauce. Also check different soy brands as they may have different components.
