Question:

Any ideas for the taxis in Bangkok?

I have recently been spending much time in Bangkok for business. I cannot believe the taxis there. Every time I go the situation seems to have worsened. The cab drivers are rude, many times if you insist on using the meter, (as opposed to paying the outrageous fare they quote you) if its rush hour, or if they simply don't feel like going to your destination, they will just refuse to drive you. This does not sound like the behavior of people who are strapped for money, yet fares were recently increased because taxi drivers were supposedly not making enough money. One time after my friend had a medical emergency and 5 cab drivers refused to take us to the hospital because it was rush hour I contacted the thai tourism board who said they often receive complaints but there's nothing they can do. So, ideas, anyone? Who to contact? Who has the power? Who cares? Many expats who I've spoken to here say this is a huge problem yet no one seems to know what to do.

  1. try a tuk-tuk, also  had taxis refusing to do journeys in rush hour so I got a tuk-tuk who said 200 bht for a 40 minute journey - I gave him 300 bht and he was delighted. The water buses are also cheap and regular if they have a convenient route
