Any ideas of what type of bug that crawls out of a cocoon that looks like a bug?

My sister has a maple tree just in her backyard. She found these weird bugs on it...or actually just their shells. They were about an inch long, brown, looked like these huge bugs, but when you touched them...they turned out to be just a shell...like something crawled out of them. Anyone ever seen a bug like this or have an idea....She has several trees in her yard, but they seemed to hang out just on the bark of the maple

  1. It's a bug that molted it's skin, probably a cicada
