Question:

Any ideas on Camping food?

by  |  earlier

I am going camping for 10 days with a huge group of people. I am a camping novice and I'm taking my 2 year old daughter with me.

The big group I am going with have every kind of cooking equipment imaginable, but we each have to bring our own food. I am putting together a list of things to make in advance - does anybody have any tried and tested ideas for camping meals? I should imagine we will all share once we are there, so I will need to make big batches of things.

Also, what kind of drinks should I take for a change from water? (non-alcoholic specifically)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  1. lemonade mix (Country Time has a mix with less sugar and contains all the sweeteners.  You just add water).

Marshmallows, graham crackers, Hershey's chocolate = smores

    hot dogs, buns

    hamburgers, buns

baking potatoes (wrap in foil and chuck on the fire)

fresh veggies that you can wrap in foil and chuck on the fire

You can make hobo packs: layer hamburger patties, carrot slices, onion, thin potato slices in foil, add your choice of seasoning (garlic salt & a smidgen of butter is good), wrap up, chuck in the fire

    pancake mix

can veggies are easy because you can just take off the top and set the can on the fire (ie: corn, beans, soups, etc)

    bacon

    eggs

    cereal

    milk

    salt, pepper, paprika, garlic salt

Goober mix (peanut butter & jelly together in one jar)

    bread

    chips

    instant oatmeal

Rice Krispy Treats (the store bought kind that are individually wrapped)

    fruit (apples, oranges are easy)

    bottled water

    butter

    etc.

Just bring stuff you'd normally eat and cook outside.  It's a lot of fun.

PS: Good luck with a 2 year old on a 10 day camping trip! LOL

  2. Trail mix: GORP  [Good old raisins and peanuts.]

The all-time best camp breakfast I ever ate was actually on a canoe trip. Oatmeal with diced  dried apricots, brown sugar and evaporated milk.  It was so rich! That was 1961, I still remember it.

I can neverr eat it again because of dietary requirements.

The thing about camping is that you are burning a lot of calories, so you can get away with serving some meals with extra carbs.

If you're serving in a mess hall, one of the drinks that I would consider would be a mix of fruit juice and soda water.  It's like pop, only better. It kind of needs ice or refrigeration, but it's a lovely change-of-pace.

Visit a camping store or get online and see what you can find in a freeze-dried meal, but make it from scratch. They are going to sell the most popular dishes.

  3. hotdogs

    hambuger

    chips

    trail mix

    pankake batter

    ice-for a cooler

    lemonade-for a chnge from water

    smore stuff

they make milk that dosent need to be cold

    bagels

  4. make sure you have lots of meats and some comfort foods like chips and hotdogs will do good to keep morale up

for drinks have isotonic drinks or gatorade

  5. Coca-Cola is a good one or a gatorade power + water thing is good, you can do hamburgers hotdogs, pork chops, anything grillable.

  6. Bless you for taking a 2 year old camping with you. Your courage is far greater then mine.

  7. the biggest help would be things to make in a big pot for sharing

spaghetti - noodles and sauce - add cooked hamburg and sausage

stew - vegetables - and stew meat -

all time favorite - hamburgs & hot dogs.

pre make some of your dinners and freeze -

they serve duel purpose - keeping things cold in your cooler and ready made meal

marinate meats in freezer bags - freeze - (see above)  like chicken for grill, or beef for kabobs

take drink mixes - lemonade, ice tea, etc. - coffee and tea bags - coffee is now sold in a (tea) bag form that is actually much better than instant coffee - just seep it like a tea bag - you can always make solar tea - for ice tea.

don't forget peanut butter & jelly for your daughter - crackers make a great snack with these staples.

her favorite cereal for snacks and breakfast

frozen cans of juice concentrate. or the fruit box drinks

the biggest thing is freeze everything you can -

I have a duel camp pie maker - you put all sorts of stuff between 2 pieces of buttered (on the outside) close the cover - and put in the coals - makes a crimped pie for great dinners or late night snacks - cheese and pepperoni, pie filling, eggs & ham, ham and cheese sandwiches

frozen bread dough you get from super market - can be used for a multiple amounts of different meals - check out a recipe network - breakfast  through desserts.

Spend some time on the internet looking for camping recipes - you'll be amazed how clever some people are.

don't forget staples - salt, pepper, favorite spices, and condiments.

The basic idea is too have fun - with a group - everyone will have forgotten something - so there will be a lot of trading going on -

Enjoy the outdoors - don't forget sun screen, and insect repellent.  Stay safe and have a good time.

Most parks are carry in - carry out - which means you take your garbage with you - so be prepared with garbage bags.  Don't forget biodegradable dish/hand soap - Save our environment.  Also ecofriendly paper products.

  8.   I've been wilderness camp cook for thirty years, and come up with great meals on just a camp fire.  First- Cheat.  Make a HUGE batch of home made spaghetti  sauce, a week ahead.  Freeze.  You get an easy camp meal, and ice for the first few days.  It's great on about the fifth day.  Just boil a big pot of water for the noodles, and heat up the sauce.  To be a real star, made a desert fit for a king.  Bring 20 cans of tart cherries, like for a pie.  Dump the cherries in a big pot, with some of the liquid from the cans, with 3-4 tablespoons sugar per can.  Bring to a boil, and put bisquick dumplings(gooey biscuits) in globs on cherries.  Cover, and let boil-simmer for 15 minutes.  Try it at home- great.  Also.  Canned chop suey.  About 8 cans would feed  25 people, and you'd just need to boil rice.  Don't forget the soy sauce.

  9. trial mix

    kool aid

  10. Don't take things which are easily crushed - bread, eggs, biscuits/cookies. Take dehydrated foods wheer possible as they save on weight and space. Canned tomatoes and tuna or salmon are great. Take rice and pasta. Herbs and spices to make it tasty. Don't take meat as storage will be a problem. You really only need to drink water, but tetra pack fruit juice could be ok as long as you don't mind drinking it warm!

  11. beans
