  1. If you have a pot luck and everyone brings a yummy dish, it will save you a lot of money. I like the rice crispy rattles idea. Look online for games, Get gifts from the dollar tree and walmart... things like laundry detergent, dish soap, Dove soap, dish towels... practical usable things rather than weird what-nots are more appreciated. What money you save, can go towards a great gift for Mom. Like a rocking chair or boppy pillow.

  2. I think the rice crispie rattles would be great, they are so cute, and make your own thank you cards... it's more personal... like you really appreciate them more. (plus cheaper)

Also to keep cost down. Through the party at your own house, don't rent a place.

Make your own cake too, cuz those can get expensive

  3. Do a potluck and have closely related guests of the mama-to-be bring different dishes.

My friend just had her baby shower and her favors were jellybeans in empty baby food jars (I kept them for her after my son was done with them).  She made a label for them at home and tied a ribbon around a circular piece of fabric on the lid.  They were very cute!

  4. $200 is cheap?   Lordy.  I don't think I've ever spend more than about $100 on ANY party except weddings and Bat Mitzvahs!

Limit your guest list to a reasonable number.  Serve cake and fresh fruit  and a variety of drinks. (Schedule the shower so it's not over a meal-time and nobody will expect to be fed.)  Buy streamers and cute favors at the dollar store. You don't need to buy thank-you cards, because the guest of honor will be sending out thank-you notes herself. A baby shower is a casual gathering of friends/family -- you don't need to spend a fortune.

  5. .

good luck.  if you plan it correctly $200 will take you far.  use coupons, shop discount, assign close friends/family to bring a side dish.

cook out is a great idea.  you can buy the meats at a place like costco or BJ's.

  6. My baby shower cost hardly anything. I had it at my mums, had it at 3pm so only served finger foods plus snacks and drinks. Cost me about $80 -$100 all up
