  1. We used to use wax-impregnated cardboard box lids.  The wax makes for a fast, smooth glide over the snow.  Durability is a concern.

  2. When I was a kid we had a blizzard that dumped three feet of snow on us and then got so cold for so long that the Ohio River froze (1977). A bunch of friends got an old car hood and used that as a sled - it was from a 1966 Chevy and about 15 of us could fit on it and it flew. Only problem was, there wasn't much to hold on to so you all fell off, but that was fun, too.

Not too practical for you, but thanks for letting me reminisce.

  3. I have always wanted to build a bridge in snow. What you do is take hot water and pour a little bit over the snow to melt it and let it turn to ice.

Im sure you can think of alot more things to make using that method.

But dont pour too much or else it will pretty much burn a hole. An igloo is also fun, REI has one of those igloo builders where its like a pocket to pack snow into blocks and its on a stick so it works like a compass.

At first i thought your question was what you can use for a sled and my answer for that was a cafeteria tray. those are awesome!

  4. Try a (new, not full) garbage bag.  They slide very fast, especially if waxed.
