Question:

Any ideas on how to make the front sight post higher on a 91/30 Mosin Nagant?

(Repost of this question, I tried earlier when Y/A was hosed up)

I just got this rifle and have been messing around with it at the range. It shoots much tighter groups than I imagined a 65 year old surplus rifle would shoot using 45 year old ammunition.

But, at 100 yards, it is about 7 inches high at the lowest rear sight setting.

I've just been aiming low, but I wanted to try and tinker with the thing to raise that front sight post some. Anybody have any experience with doing that on this rifle??

Thanks.

  1. Get some shrink tubeing and put it on the front site then slowly trim it down till you get your setting you are after!

  2. Rearmost setting on rear sight is what is called battle sight; one click forward is actually lower (or supposed to be).  Remington manufactured many of the rear sights and the russians bought them.  You might check at Numrich Arms, West Hurley, NY if you want to pursue getting a higher post for the front sight; what the heck, maybe it is a stock item.  Those guys have everything for just about anything.  I got some screws for a Japanese Arisaka 7.7 and some magazine parts for a M44 Mosisn; so, like I said, give them a try.

  3. aim higher,

  4. Try it from 200 yards. This was a long range rifle and most ammo levels off at about 200 yards anyhow. If you were to shoot at about 50 yards you would probably miss the target all together.

  5. Battle sight.

A rifleman was taught to hit an enemy soldier between the breast pockets, his belt and his collar.

I bet you would find that keeping your aim in that area, without making any mechanical sight adjustment would yield hits out to 300 yards or there abouts.

Your Mosin is not really a target rifle. But if you shoot 14" circles and keep a 6 o'clock hold you will tear out the bulls eye. I'll get back to you after a little research on a 91/30 and making a higher front post.

EDIT: Here is how to do it: http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/mos...

I'm in the same boat with an replica1853 Enfield, 3 band, 58 caliber rifled musket. It shoots over a foot high at 100 yards. I am seriously considering soldering on modern sights and start hunting with the Enfield.

    keep up the Good Shooting.
