  1. We have a book club and the members get to suggest books as well as the leader.  This helps keep the children involved.  Then every one reads the book and meets to talk about it.  I usually go round and ask every one what they thought so every one gets a chance to say something, thing we have a freer discussion.  I usually have some questions to help things along, like, "Why did X do this?";  "Why was this a good description.?" and things like that.

  2. We've had a few book clubs over the years, a few at the second grade level. I (the leader) would choose 3-5 books and the kids would vote on the one they wanted to read. That was our first club.

Recently I started another following "Deconstructing Penguins"  which really helps me with asking meaningful questions. I get parents to be involved too and we spend about an hour a month having a nice cozy book discussion. We also have a tradition of chocolate fudge cookies that none of the members could live without.
