Depends on what you mean by "reeds". If you mean Phragmites, I'd advise against it; that's an invasive plant in the US. Cattails do a pretty good job of filtration and provide food for wildlife as well. A mixed bed might be the most environmentally-friendly.

Not knowing how big the property is, the only suggestion is the solar and wind power is a great addition to any rural property.   The thermosipon solar hot water system would be ideal.  No pumps, or electricity required.  A wind generator would be good at night or day.  Some solar panels can give you electricity but that is a large investment.  

Do you have running water thru the property?
