  1. Better described as a "USP" (Unique Selling Proposition).  It is more than just a statement, it is what makes you unique, what makes you different, why people should buy from you.  This is what you base your marketing around - the unique message you want to convey to your audience.  More info on this is available at http://www.themarketersmind.com

Here is an example that my partner uses:

Randy Ruggles is a Copywriter and Marketing Consultant who helps small

business owners increase profits by 25-100% within 60 days, GUARANTEED,

without spending additional money on advertising.

See, here he says what he does (increase profits), who he works with (small business owners), states an actual amount (min. 25%), Why you should buy from him (it is guaranteed), and what it will cost (no additional money on advertising).  Everything here is very targeted and specific.  This is what he does.  That is a USP

  2. A core marketing message is a longterm marketing plan to instill a brand identity in a company's customers. It is usually conveyed through catchy slogans. Examples include Nike's 'Just do it', McDonald's 'I'm lovin' it', or Geico's 'So easy a caveman could do it'.
