Question:

Any ideas why a recruitment agency would want to see my NI number before sending my CV to an employer?

I've sent my cv for an advertised vacancy. I'm suspicious - as far as I understand NI numbers are only needed when you start working for a company.

  1. There is no need for them to have this info at the mo as you may not get the job. Ask them why & if they kick up a fuss say they can check that you're a UK citizen on the electoral register.

  2. They may be being careful.

It is illegal to employ an illegal immigrant for example - your NI number will prove that you are a british citizen.

  3. Your NI number is a way of making sure you have the right to work in the UK (NOT necessarily that you are a UK citizen).

Some employers who use a recruitment agency also like to have a "trial period" so they can see how you fit into the company, and an easy way for them to do this is to take you on as a temp via the agency for a specified amount of time.  In this case, the agency would need to put you on their books, and as such would be required to have your NI number.

Your best bet to find out why they want the number would be to call and ask them.  If they're evasive about it I'd suggest you talk to the Citizens' Advice Bureau to check your rights and their legal requirements.

    Hope this helps!

  4. This is just part of procedure I'm afraid. They have to know that you are elligible for work, over 18 I think, and there may be other reasons. Your NI number is part of your identity. When a recuitment agency sends your details to a potential employer, they need all the correct information. That is just part of it. It is the law. Did you know that there is recruitment law, and that it affects so many things: interviews, references, criminal record checks, possibly medical checks? I have had to educate my brother on just such subjects. I wish you well.

  5. they have to check you are eligible for work.

  6. To check you can legally work in the country.
