  1. no meditation in most schools i've seen. they do have "tenents" to live by...a code if you will. but who can enforce such virtues?

it is a korean martial art that is based on japanese karate. it was created around 1955. it isnt 2000 yrs old like some will tell you. and today it's more of a sport than a self defense art. at least in the west. in korea it's still a good art.

  2. TKD is a very Americanized martial art that stems from an old art form from Korea.  It's a very athletic martial art because as you advance through the ranks, you learn more flashier kicks and blocks.  For instance, as a white belt, you'll learn a side kick.  As you advance, you'll learn a skipping sidekick, flying sidekick, etc.

If you find a good school, they will have kids' classes that emphasize basic character education traits you'd find in most schools: respect, responsibility, politeness, etc.  It's great for kids because they will look up to their instructor more than they would a teacher so they should absorb the info a little better.  I didn't learn any meditation techniques when I took TKD a while back.  If that's what you're looking for, might try Tai Chi or an intensive Yoga program.

It's also a great way to stay in shape and learn a little bit of self defense.  The moves aren't the most practical for street use but what you learn at the beginning would probably be the most beneficial.

  3. 5 tenets of TKD: Courtesy, Integrity, Self Control, Perseverance, and Indomitable Spirit.

  4. learn ITF. its more an art, whereas WTF is more a sport.

  5. I do WTF taekwondo and we have to meditate every time we start class, sometimes 2 minutes or sometimes an hour, but it varies from time to time. and any sort of laws? well, some taekwondo schools have their own, but in WTF the common ones are courtesy, perservirance, integrity, self control, and indominable spirit. but all taekwondo schools and masters have their own laws, but thats just the common ones I know of.

  6. they teach you all kinds of morals...they do meditate a bit depends where you go...also the laws they live by are the 'Tenets of Taekwondo" which is curtisy, integrity, indomitable spirit, self-control, and perserverence.  taekwondo is really good for your mind and body...also you'll learn amazing self-defense and may get to compete...i recommend it definitely=]

  7. It all depends on what school and style of TKD you study. Some styles are for sport and competition and some are for combat and self defense. In my school we learn WTF Tae Kwon Do as well as traditional Chung Do Kwan which is very powerful and similar to Muay Thai with knees and elbows. We do meditate occasionally and learn to channel our chi because or instructor is also trained in Dim Mak. We learn and train to live by the five tenets of TKD: Courtesy, Integrity, Self Control, Perseverance, and Indomitable Spirit.
