Any information on Selchies (the mystical creatures)? ?

Question

I am writing a book and am involving the mystical creature, Selchie. I am doing research, but can't find much info on them. Does anyone have any info on them? Any help would be appreciated! I also wanted to know if Selchies can be male or female, if they can reproduce, and do they have any usual physical and mental characteristics as humans? Thanks for any help at all! :D

Selkies are, as I'm sure you know, the faerie wives who take the forms of seals.  They can, however be male. When the selkie wife finds her skin, as she always does, she is generally seen taking off with her selkie husband, whom she always stays faithful to.  Actually, the male selkies some times take away a human, even though female selkies tend to prefer selkies to humans.  In fact there is a folktale about a seal hunter who went to the country of the seal people (selkies/roanes, or, with your spelling, selchies), where he saved one of their people and repented against seal hunting for the rest of his days.  They aren't said to have "unusual" characteristics, though they are more attractive than average humans.  However, in folktales, the characters often realized, upon getting a good gaze at them, that they're not human.  It doesn't say how they look different, I think they just look strange and otherworldly.  But, in your book they can look as normal or strange as anyone, as it is YOUR book.
