Randalstown is situated on the River Main, approximately 8 kilometres from Antrim and 35 kilometres from Belfast. Its location at the end of the M2 Motorway makes it the ideal centre for tourists with easy access to airports and ferries and to the principal visitor attractions in Antrim Borough and the entire province.

The origin of the town is uncertain but it is believed to have been the site of extensive iron works in the 17th century. In 1666, Rose Ann O'Neill of Shane's Castle obtained a charter from Charles II granting that the town be constituted a free borough with the right to send  two members to the Irish Parliament. She also renamed the town after her husband Randall McDonnell and although the name has stood the test of time, the members of parliament disappeared with the Act of Union of 1801.

Randalstown's more recent fame has been based on the linen industry established in 1864 by the Webb Brothers and known for many years as The Old Bleach. There has been a textiles presence in the town until very recently.

Randalstown was designated a conservation area in 1996 as a typical 19th century Ulster town. It still retains its original street layout and many of the original buildings and structures from the 18th and 19th centuries. Among the most striking of these is the railway viaduct built by Charles Lanyon in 1859 and although it ceased to carry rail traffic around 1960 it has recently been brought back into use by ARCHES as a walkway and cycle path.

  3. I live near Randalstown, its really not that interesting!  there's around 5,000 people living there, it is historically known for its linen and iron production, well I cant really think of anything else to tell you other than it's an OK place just not very much going on.

  4. there is a nice bridge over the river as you drive in from Antrim.

Shanes castle has a bit of history behind it but it might be classed as Antrim. Not much to Randalstown.
