  1. I would say the best part of playing lib is your ability to see the entire court.  You are typically the farthest player back and have the best view of both sides.  A good lib can not only pass, dig, (and almost more importantly) take every single free ball... but should also be the eyes for the hitters calling out holes and blocks.  If your hitters respect you, they should appreciate the valuable input you can offer because you can see the other teams weaknesses better as well as holes in your own block and defensive scheme.

Other nice thing is that when playing defense as a lib instead of an OH, you can commit to the floor even more.  You'll almost never have to jump and leave the ground, so you are free to play the game as low as possible to enhance your digging ability.

I'd say the worst part of being a lib is crappy blocking.  If you have poor middles, or just weak seams it is much more difficult to play your position because you are in constant worry about hitters blasting the ball through the block.  It really messes with your positioning.  Oooh, that and wings that reach into your seam.

  2. The Down:

Its a simple truth that the basic volleyball skills are over looked, but essential. With no passers there is no amazing kill. Just like football - with no snap there is no amazing throwers, or Basketball - with out the passer you can't get the look. The down part is that to most of the fans your significance in the team is overlooked.

    The Ups:

Anybody who really knows volleyball realizes that without the pass you have nothing. Not only are you the most important person on the floor, but you also have alot of responcibility. Without your pass the team has nothing. It is also alittle easier to play. Unlike a hitter or a setter you have a defined role. You alway pass, pass, pass, and pass some more. However, with the simplicity there comes alot of responicibilty. You will be expected to make a perfect pass every single time. Its your job. Do it well.

  3. well i love being a libero because you are always playing and helping out your team. You have the chance to  keep everything going and help your team win. another good thing is that since you are not hitting and jumping as much it saves your knees and shoulders.

the bad part about being a libero is that people dont really regocnize what you do for a team. when someone gets a kill everybody is like "yay" even though that is what they are expected to do. when i libero makes a dig people dont celebrate because that is what we are expected to do. another part about being a libero that i do not like is that people do not realize how difficult it is to pass a perfect ball everytime. hitters can mess up and still get kills or tip, but when a libero messes up it is impossible to keep the play going. the last thing is that i miss serving and hitting.

overall i love being libero though and i would not trade it for anything!

  4. Hey liberos!

My favorite thing about being a libero is:

-Going in for anyone we want and not have to stick with the same person all the time.

-Its also fun to wear a different jersey (its fun to be noticed!)

    - Its a great for anyone who lives to play the back row.  Although defensive players do not get as much recognition like hitters do, for anyone who loves to play back row, there is always a ball to save

-Although you play back row all of the time, you are always in the game because as soon as the middle hitter gets to the back you are SUPPOSED to go in.  And because the two middle hitters start opposite you will constantly be going in for one of them.

One of my downs would have been not being able to serve, but recently high school liberos are now allowed to serve!

A down as a libero is that you are expected to pass PERFECTLY every time and sometimes it causes alot of pressure.  During some games I have played in our coach actually told us to serve to the libero because they were not a very good one.  As a libero you defiantly do not want people noticing that you are the defensive specialist and you cant work the back row.  There is a TON of pressure. But you can handle it! :-)

Hope this helps!  Good luck and play with your heart!  Remember: No balls hit the floor!

  5. I'm an OH, but I know that a lot of libero's only get credit for great digs, when great serve recieve sometimes goes less noticed.

People in lower level volleyball don't say 'wow that player has fantastic serve recieve', but they are impressed by digs.
