Question:

Any luck with Dog DNA tests?

Has anybody used these tests and feel that they have gotten accurate results? My dog is "supposed" to be a Havanese/Pekingese mix, but he looks so much like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that it's ridiculous!!! He's my baby and I'll love him no matter what, but I am very curious as to his true breed(s), as I'd love to get another just like him! Let me know what you think about the tests! THANKS!

  1. They are required for many kinds of Championship wins.

You must be able to prove that the parents on the registration form  are really your dog's parents.

The parents of course have to have been DNA tested too.

They are not meant to tell you what breed your dog is but rather whether its' parents are as registered.

  2. NONE of those tests will guarantee that a dog is a purebred dog... if that gives you any indication of accuracy.

They are mostly for fun.  I wouldnt consider them any thing serious.

The thing is, your dog is a mixed breed...  even if you knew his exact mix, and found another dog of the exact mix.. neither one will be "just like" the other.  Even littermates will look and act so much different from each other.  Mixes are all individuals with unique qualities.. you wont find another like him.

  3. I'm not impressed with them.  I think that they are inaccurate.

  4. I would wait a while before you take the test. I've seen some of the results on websites, and half the time they seem a little far from accurate. I wouldn't trust them. Perhaps in the future they'll have something that has a better success rate.
