  1. I have had some pretty nasty side effects from mine, I'm not sure if it will be worth it, but I hope so.  To start off, most insurance won't cover it and it's about $900.  In most cases it's still cheaper then a co-pay every month, but only if you plan on using it for the full five years.

It hurt like crazy going in, but I was told that was because I had a c-section and that it didn't always hurt like that.

I also had some side effects that Bayar (the company that makes and sells Mirena) doesn't really talk about.  In addition to the fatigue, nausea, vomiting and bloating I had severe depression, weight gain, sexual side effects, and swelling in my feet and legs.  I'm hoping that these go away, but it's been almost 4 months and nothing has changed yet.

It may work well for some people, but it's been a nightmare for me and now I feel like I can't get it taken out because it cost so much! I am not the only one with bad experiences, even though Bayar says that only 3% of women have side effects.  Just make sure it's what you really want before you get it done.

  2. My friend has it now, although she is not a mom. that fact made it a little more painful for insertion because her cervix had never been opened that far. She has been complaining lately about pretty severe cramping, but then again it has only been about 4 months since it was put in. I think that in the long term she will like it but right now she is not too happy with it's effects (which are not TOO common, though).
