Any music magazines that accept articles??

Anywhere I would be able to write and submit an article to a music magazine, preferably rock or metal?

I want to start sending in things on music to start with a possible future in journalism, just to see how well my current writing is.

  1. You can always send things you write to publications, with a covering letter asking the editor to tell you what he thinks. Obviously, you can send off hundreds of pieces and never hear anything back, but if an editor thinks you show particular promise they'll sometimes write back giving you advice. A number of journalists have gotten a lucky break through being persistent. Few major magazines publish the work of non-journalists (although some magazines occasionally hold contests inviting readers to submit their own review of something, with the prize being the publishing of the winning entry), but what about looking into writing something for a small webzine or fanzine?

Another good way to get your writing on the map is to offer to write reviews and articles for the website of the aspirational band of a friend or acquaintance. If they ever get signed to a label, you'll gain some notoriety as their publicist; I know somebody personally who was lucky enough to have that happen, though whether it's common is debatable.
