  1. This answer is in the context of your other open question "What natural remedies/foods are good for heartburn?". I'll share my experience. If it helps you great. If not, I hope it helps someone else.

For many years I had sleep problems and chronic acid reflux (heartburn).  The sleep problems would keep me awake (Inability to shut off the brain, restless leg syndrome, waking up with sweats, weaking up to involuntary jolting movements, breathing problems).

I'll skip the long story and get to the conclusion. I now know I am chemically sensitive and have severe dust mite allergy.  If I sleep in a conventional mattress (full of pesticides, mold retardants, flame retardants, formaldehyde and the like), the sleep problems that plagued me for 1.5 decades return immediately and the acide reflux problem also returns.

So after about 15 years of frustrating sleep problems I discovered something by accident. That is, I have no sleep problems if I sleep outside under the stars. After discovering that, the rest is history. Now, I have an chemical free, clean air environment to sleep in and all is well (and that includes stringent control of dust mite).  The acid reflux problem is also gone because I filter my air and remodelled my home and office to remove as many VOC-emitting substances as possible.  If I spend a full day in a "hostile" indoor air environment, all of the symptoms return but I can get them under control quickly with a couple of good sleeps in a "friendly" air environment.

If you have a covered area to sleep outside, try it for a few nights so see what it does for you. . The first day I tried it, I awoke in the morning with a level of mental and physical energy not experienced since I was a kid, if ever.  I knew in that instant that after 15 years of being chronically ill, I could be well again!  I sleep like a baby now. It is not always practical to sleep outside. In lieu, my hubby rigged me up what he calls his "fresh air device". He refurbished an old small Honeywell air purifier to attach a 4-inch accordian hose to either end. One end dangles out the window, the other end is propped up to push fresh outside air on my face while I sleep. Dandy little gadget--one I absolutely could not live without!

Hopefully something helps you here. You might be interested in this article about how chemical and pharmaceutal companies are one and the same, and how they control the medical science for their own gain.

  2. i suggest hav a nice bath then, have some warm milk and go to bed... lights out and soothing music int he background should help :D

  3. Chamomile tea, warm milk, warm bath, lavender scented pillowcase and exercise are all good for both.  Except, don't exercise too close to the time you want to be able to sleep.

  4. marijuana.

  5. lavender oil in a tea light oil burner...

  6. passiflora mother tincture

    avena sativa mother tincture

20 drops 2 times a day  from both of them in some warm water

youll get them in a homeopathic store

  7. I have both chronic anxiety and insomnia. My anxiety roots in social so I try to be around people more. It's taken a few years, but I'm much better than I was. As for my insomnia, a mixture of chamomile tea/wine before bed with meditation and lavender help a lot.

  8. homeopathic remedy, arg nit 30..take 1 if you feel very anxious before an exam or interview.

also rescue remedy is great on a regular basis as comes from flowers so totally safe, you can add 4/5 drops to a bottle of water( not spring),

like the others have said .lavender and camomile tea at night.

try to do some deep breathing excercises every day as this helps us to relax.

last thing, take b. supplements as this can help the nervous system.

    best of luck.

  9. Valerian root

  10. maybe some yoga or hot milk, maybe green tea....aw forget that ****, the only thing that helps me sleep when i have anxieties before bed is just some old fashioned hard work, why work at all? i like to do it to forget my worries. and afterwards, i'd jump into a nice hot bath with peach banana smelling bubbes...see, you want to do some work before a bath so that you feel completely tired out to think about anything at all......

  11. sure-

valerian root is a big one. It's like Valium only not so strong. you shouldn't drive or whatever with it though.

melatonin helps some folks as well

relaxation is pretty cool too- in the long run better if you can do it. lay in bed and tighten all the muscles in your toes, count to ten, relax them. go up your legs and stomach arms and face, one muscle at a time.  works well for some, not so well for others..

beyond that, the tea section of a natural food store is full of ideas..

    good luck

    L

  12. I swear by Orchex!! It is made by Standard Process and is a natural tranquilizer (the valarian root works too) I use it every day for anxiety and insomnia! I was on Xanax and taking sleeping pills, this is all natural and organic so it wont interfere with anything else your on. You can usually get that at any chiropractors office that carries Standard Process

  13. Aroma Therapy has been SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN to be bullshit… If you feel relaxed sniffing Lavendr, it is because of the PLACEBO EFFECT of thinking that it will relax you… TOTAL BULLSHIT…

For warm milk to work, you would need to drink 30+ glasses of it for enough Triptofani to enter your system to actually make you sleepy… Again, it is nothing but placebo effect… Same with Turkey…

Valerian Root has SCIENTIFIC BACKING to it’s effectiveness… If you purchase Nature Made valerian root you can then go to their website and enter in the code off the bottle, get points, and then they mail you coupons so you don’t pay full price for their products ever again… Between the coupons and the “Buy one get one” deals, I haven’t paid for a bottle of Nature Made in YEARS…

OH! If you have a cat and keep valerian root supplements in your house, keep the bottles out of reach of your cats… I don’t understand why, but they LOVE to l**k the pills and I have no idea what it would do to them… I’ve had 3 cats go after a dropped pill like it was a shrimp… all 3 just sniffed it and then started to l**k it… I had to hide the bottle of it to keep them out of it. I don’t know if it would hurt them, but better safe than sorry… Now I warn ANYONE I recommend Valerian Root to… Cats LOVE it!

Melatonin (3mg) is also a supplement that has scientific backing…

The #1 recommendation that anyone can give you is to TAKE THE DISTRACTIONS OUT OF YOUR BEDROOM!!!

    No Computer…

    No TV…

Get thick curtains for your windows…

Install low wattage light bulbs in your bedroom lamps…

8 times out of 10, you can’t sleep because you have too much light and mentally stimulating things happening in your bedroom!!!!!

Too much light keeps your brain from making it’s OWN Melatonin and that leads to an inability to fall asleep naturally…

Too much light AFTER you fall asleep (say, from that street light) will stop your brain from going in to the deep, restful stages of sleep…

Your bedroom should be for THREE THINGS:

    1. Sleep

    2. s*x

    3. Reading

    NOTHING MORE!

THAT will ‘cure’ most people’s inability to get a good night’s rest!
