  1. It is a very bad situation.  At least here on abs/cbn (one of the philippine national stations) they still aren’t really saying what caused it to capsize.

They tried sending divers into the ship to see if maybe some people were trapped in air pockets.  Unfortunately between the debris as well as bodies in the ship as well as the precarious position the ship is on the ledge of a deep underwater cliff.  And not hearing any sounds tapping etc.  they decided to pull out.

Unfortunately my tagalog is not that strong so I might be mistranslating some things.

If my translation of the news here is accurate, only about 100 of the 700+ on board got out the rest are either trapped or missing.   (the count on number of people on the ship seems to vary from 700 to nearly 1000)

Something that struck me odd on the news a high number of the survivors seemed to be ship crew.  Almost seems they didn’t do much to get anyone off the ship.   (that's my impression not what the news said)

But then they also aren’t saying exactly what happened, how fast or when.

Some suggest it was at night so only the people awake really had time to do anything. For it capsized quickly.

However, they were also traveling when the typhoon was in full blast in that area. There is no excuse for the ship even being in the area.   It seems like they left from manila trying to reach cebu before the typhoon reach the area.  And the storm caught them at sea.

Sadly had people been able to get out, there was an island (granted small and uninhabited but still land) apparently within swimming distance of the boat when the accident happened.  So even the lack of lifeboats would not have been as major of an issue if there were enough life vests.

Unfortunately right now it’s still really sketchy on what happened.  And here in the Philippines I doubt there will be much of an investigation.   It would also surprise me if any serious negligence charges are placed against the company.   So we may never really know what happened.

  2. The last I read was it wasn't looking like there where survivors.  I hope the next update will prove this wrong.

  3. I have a sinking feeling they will not find anyone alive.
