Question:

Any news on Valtteri Filppula re-signing with the Wings??

Hockeybuzz.com shows the Wings having about $2.5 million in cap space. What kind of money should he get?? BTW he is a RFA so if other teams offer big bucks, Wings will get compensation. I'd hate to lose Fil because of the Hossa signing.

  1. No word yet, but Holland doesn't seem to want to let him go. He's said that whatever he's offered he's going to match it. Nothing is official yet though, but i'm sure he plans on keeping him. I hope he does.

  2. read this morning he isnt doing anything till later this summer. guess he is wanting to take it all in and also have a chance to see what everyone is doing

  3. I haven't heard a word about him resigning yet

  4. Actually the Wings have about 4 million in cap space. Holland said he wants Filppula back and he will match any offer he gets, but the tight cap space could make it difficult.

Supposedly Vancouver is preparing an offer sheet to try and get him. Depending on what happens Holland talked about using Lilja as an insurance policy and if Meech, Quincey, or Ericsson beat him out in training camp they can trade him away to free up  cap space. I don't see why if he needed to he couldn't do that earlier to free up space to re-sign Filppula plus our other players that need to be re-signed.

Update (July 5th): Filppula filed for arbitration on saturday. That means that no team can extend an offer sheet for him. The Wings can still try and re-sign him before he goes to the arbitration hearing sometime between July 20th and August 5th. It would probably be in Filppula's best interest to re-sign before arbitration so he gets a longer and most likely higher salary than what he would get through arbitration.
