Question:

Any older guys go through Basic Training?

I'm 30 and not exactly in the same shape (back aches sometimes) as I was at 18,20...but I have a better muscle build...just not as great with the cardio needed in running. It will be Fort Jackson, so not for a combat MOS, but all the same I only have a week or so. What, if any differences will I have to encounter being older? I've been told that I will most likely be some sort of leader (squad?). Also I haven't been running, but if there is determination to do well, then I will be ok. Any thoughts by anyone that has been and especially any older folks. Thanks.

  1. Lance Armstrong was older than you when he won the Tour de France several more times. Here's a tip. Don't give 100% the first day. Make like your out of shape. If you're too good they'll see it, get jealous and make your like miserable. Being more mature it'll be a piece of cake.

  2. 30 is not old in Basic Training. There will be others older than that and if you prepare for it, you will be able to show the young recruits how it is done and be a role model just be being older and more experienced. I know a 41 year old who went, Basic, AIT, Airborne, Air Assault...breezed through it. Just got to want it bad enough.

  3. My son joined right before he turned 36.  He's become a leader and voted by his group as the person they'd follow.  He started running about 5 weeks before he went in and could run rings around much younger men and women.  So good idea to start running, have a positive attitude, and use the knowledge you gained so far.
