I really want to buy the Nikon S550. I love digital cameras but I don't really like the ones with rechargable batteries. I'd rather just put my own in. I'm not sure if the Nikon S550 even has a rechargable battery or not, but I saw it in the store really quick today. It was thin but I'm pretty sure I saw space for a battery.

Basically - I want a Nikon digital camera but with replaceable batteries... yet not too bulky. I may be asking for the impossible :p

  1. The ultra slim cameras usually use a Lithium Ion Rechargeable battery.  I'm not sure how you define bulky, but the Nikon Coolpix L18 might be the camera you want.  (The S550 uses a Li-Ion battery, as do just about all the other cameras in the S series.  There are some of the P series cameras that use AA as well, but you'd have to check out a particular model first.  Also, you might qualify the P series cameras as bulky.

In the long run though, Li-Ion batteries last much longer than AA batteries.  You'll get way more shots, as long as you remember to keep it charged.  Most of the people that miss shots because they have low battery problems are usually those that have cameras that use AA batteries.  Digital Cameras are high drain devices, so they eat through standard AA batteries.  (There are some lithium batteries in AA size that last longer, but are much more expensive and non-rechargeable, so you have to replace them often.)

Rechargeable AA batteries are even worse.  Their voltage is a little bit lower than standard alkaline batteries. So by Joule's law (P=VI), the drain is going to be more.  This is because the power is going to be the same.  A lower voltage, means you need to have a higher current to get the same value of P.
