  1. There's so much you need to know even to play at the 1600 level... First, get a lot of practice. Play a lot. Second, check out a book from the library. I can't give you an infinitude of information in one comment. Third, don't trade down. Fourth, when in doubt, move a pawn.

  2. Depending on your level etc. I might talk over or down to you.

So do you want to read me prattling about the center or do want some inter active tutoring?

Depending on your level, that site does not suck.

  3. ○ Never make your king vurnerable. For example, protect the pawn that is in front of your king until you castle.

    ○ Castling to the shorter side is always better than doing it to the long side. Also, protect your king in the castled posititon with a rook, bishop, or knight.

    ○ Don't bring out your king TOO early unless you have an absolute advantage if you do.

    ○ Value even one pawn. A pawn might be your key to winning at the end.

    ○ Only trade with a player (Queen-Queen, Rook-Rook, etc.) if you have MORE points (in pieces) than him.

    ○ Always think about your future moves before moving a piece.

    ○ Read some chess strategy books, magazines, etc. etc.

    ○ Get Chessmaster, or just find a site where you can challenge other players to a chess game and practice.

    ○ Never play with a pessimistic mind.

  4. use your mind

  5. Yes play with someone that is as good as you or better.  Sure you will lose at the beginning, but you will see their pattern and you will win.  Once you beat your opponent, find someone else to play.  I did this in high school.  My physics teacher used to beat me, but I started beating him and he would get mad.  Later I went and bought a computerized chess game.  The easy levels were hard until you play it enough and see the same pattern.  It also gives you a chance when you play the same levels over again to try a different move.  It is fun, but challenging.  One thing you have to remember, there is someone that can always beat you unless you are the best in the world and even then, sometimes they lose too.

  6. dont play it

  7. develope your pieces, castle within the first ten moves, control the center, if you're in the U S join the united states chess federation

  8. 1. Learn the rules and strategy.

    2. Play chess against opponents of about your own playing strength.

    3. Study actual games played.

    4. Enjoy spending a lifetime improving your skill.
