Question:

Any one know about repair costs on a single rowing shell?

My son (14) loves crew but they had too many kids this season and ended up 'cutting' a few of them. He would probably be able to go back to it in the fall but I really don't want him sitting at home playing video games, watching TV, etc all spring and summer. So, I have been looking for a single rowing shell that is priced reasonably (few hundred $) that I could get for him.

I found one but it has a couple of cracks in the fiberglass. From what the owner tells me, it is usable etc and could be repaired by someone who knows how to do it or professionally. However, I do not know ANYTHING about this and was hoping someone here may be able to give me some good advice on this matter.

Are Fiberglass cracks in these shells fixable?

Are repair costs high?

What is a reasonable price for a single rowing shell?

Is there a specific site in the Northeast where I could fine one - if this one is no good - would be appreciated.

Appreciate if someone could write me: ahyat@sbcglobal.net.

  1. I do not know about costs and where, but here is the short of it from my experiences with fiberglass.

The fiberglass can be patched and as long as it is not leaking the shell is "usable". As with any cracked fiberglass, the integrity of the hull will never be as good as new. You need to check how bad the cracks are and if they are all the way through. It just depends on the severity. If they are bad, then the boat might break from normal use, if they are minor, then it might be ok as long as it doesn't get dropped or run into anything.

I would personally be wary of boat just because the owner is trying to get rid of the thing.

Your best bet would be to call a dealer and have them give you the rundown.

New rowing shells start in the $3500 range, racing quality almost double that.  Used boats depend on market for them, and age.

Repairs should only be $300-$400 if minor, and for a boat at the same price, that is incredible to get into rowing.
