  1. If you could please specify whether you want a real mace or decorative, and if real, chained or solid - I will be able to answer.

Decorative: This is a good site with an easy process

    Real:

Specific types of materials will be up to you, what you like to hold, how much maintenance you want to put into it, etc. Because I have no blacksmith experience, I used what I could find and it worked well.

    1. You will need a pipe that can be hammered. Take a look at home improvement centers or plumbing stores. Find one that you like the heft of, you should be able to wrap your hand around it comfortably without your fingers overlapping.

    2. Get two 6"x8" sheets of metal thick enough to cut through but not flimsy.

    3. Get a chain 11"-12" long.

    4. You have two choices at this point, you can attach 1" of the  end of the chain inside the pipe with either a nut and bolt (meaning you have to drill two holes in the end of the pipe) or you can weld the chain into the inside of the pipe and then hammer it closed. I suggest the nut and bolt.

    5. Take the sheets of metal. The first two inches of the 8" side are going to be used to attach to the chain. You will make a "Tongue" from this side by cutting two 2"x2" squares out of the two corners.

    6. Now you can draw your cuts on the metal. Draw two "U's" on each 2" edge so that the outer edge when cut will have 3 sharp points. You will have a 2 inch center area that is not cut. After you have drawn, cut the sheets.

    7. Lay 8" of the chain inside the 2" center area, leaving one link hanging out of the top and weld the chain to the center area between the two sheets. Now bend the sharp points outward and with a hammer and a blunt screwdriver, hammer the center area into the welded chain area, adjusting the bent points so that they keep pointing outward.  BE CAREFUL. The cut metal and the points are very sharp. You can make them sharper by filing the edges of the points.

The purpose of the link hanging out the top is that you can attach other flinging spikes or "luck charms", etc to the top.

Last, you can make the pipe handle better by plugging the inside of the pipe with either rubber pieces, or expanding foam sealant. It won't add too much weight to the inside of the weapon.  Wrap the handle with leather for comfort.

This design can be changed in a multitude of ways. If you can find a steel ball, you can attach spikes to it and then weld the chain to the ball, I have not found a steel ball yet. A blacksmith could make one.

This is based on a french slashing mace that was used on horseback. It would cause massive damage while galloping at high speeds along the edges of a "hedgehog" or protective formation. If they were lucky enough to catch under the arm, a defenders ability to use their own weapon became useless. they were made from scraps and pieces that blacksmiths had hanging around which made them cheap weapons to churn out.

This is a good start to creating any number of nice showpieces for your wall. A blacksmithing course and a good  firebox would dramatically increase the "nicety" of any weapon.

  2. Why is this in special education?
