Any one know what sort of mushroom this is?

in the picture, the mushroom is the middle far left, the gold one

we found some in the mountains but cant find what they are

  1. It is Gyromitra esculenta=

    Gyromitra esculenta, one of several species of fungi known as False morels, is an ascomycete fungus widely distributed across Europe and North America. It is normally found in sandy soils under coniferous trees in spring and early summer. The fruiting body, or mushroom, is an irregular brain-shaped cap dark brown in colour which can reach 10 cm (4 in) high and 15 cm (6 in) wide, perched on a stout white stalk up to 6 cm (2½ in) high.

    Gyromitra esculenta contains the poisonous principle gyromitrin and although these mushrooms are only rarely involved in poisonings in either North America or Western Europe intoxications are seen frequently in eastern Europe and Scandinavia.

    At one time up to 23% of mushroom fatalities each year were attributed to this species in Poland.

    Deaths rates have now dropped; in Sweden poisoning is common but life-threatening poisonings have not been detected and there had not been a fatality reported over the 50 years from 1952 to 2002.

  2. They bear dish- or cup-shaped fruiting bodies. The best known member is the pig ear D. perlata, which is deemed edible after thorough cooking....

    so yes,it is edible for people.
