  1. It was dirt in the pocket and it relates to former England captain Mike Atherton. He was seen by TV cameras to take dirt from his pocket and rub it on the ball it an attempt to make the ball swing.

  2. above answer correct . same phrase often used in golf , when player intentionally raises handicap ,total cheating . called sandbagger . hence sand in pockets . or wallet full of sand .
