  1. The easiest way is to take the video cassettes to your nearest druggist or photographic dealer. For a moderate fee (30$ each,?) they'll transfer your treasured experiences onto a DVD.

You can also run your VHS video recorder into your computer line in and "capture" the video. You then convert it to something smaller like MPEG 4 using provided tools. You'll need either a capture card or a video card "TV in" for this, as well as some software.

The last option is to use a VHS/DVD recorder dual well unit. They cost about 150$ and easily copy anything not commercially sold (MacroVision protected...) In a near-on-touch operation assuming you buy a fairly intuitive model. The picture won't be as good as the first two options, however.

  2. You may use the best software I have seen AVS Video Tools. It can convert to/from all key format, upload video or DVD directly to key portables like iPod, Sony PSP, Archos, Zen Creative, and mobiles.

It can capture video from DV or webcams, TV tuners, DVB-T, DVB-S, transfer VHS tapes to DVD, remove commercials, edit video, copy and burn DVDs and video files: AVI (DivX, XviD, etc.), MP4, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, DVD, VOB, VRO, MPEG 1,2,4, MPG, DAT, VCD, SVCD, ASF, H.263, H.264, RM, DVR-MS.
