The phenomenon happens to most people at least once in life, and not ALL of the common elements are experienced by everyone. (For instance, I have experienced sleep paralysis but I never felt a feeling of dread or a weight on my chest).

Some people are more prone to hypnogagia than others, and most cultures even have terms for it. In Russia it was known as Baba Yaga, a witch who would sit on the chest of sleeping people to curse them, etc.

It's likely an explanation for accounts of incubi, succubi, demons, angel visitations, abductions/alien encounters, etc. throughout history.

You might research hypnogagia further if it sounds like you may be experiencing it often, there are accounts of people who commonly suffered from it who were able to overcome it or lessen its more frightening aspects, even to simply change it into lucid dreaming (dreams in which you can control what's happening around you -- like the perfect video game!)
