  1. The only legal "appartments" you can rent are "casa particular" ( private rooms in a Cuban house) with an offical license. The price range from 25 to 50 cuc a day, if you can make a long term arrangement you can get prices starting from 650 cuc a month ( around 750 US$ ) The housing prices in Havana are relatively high because there's a shortage.

  2. Havana is a very clean, safe city and www.MyCubaFest.com has links to inexpensive accommodations as well as other valuable travel information. I suggest Havana-Rentals or Casa Particulars websites to view different apartments/room rates. Send an email to Havana-Rentals and explain your situation and your price preference. They are very nice and accomodating.  I have used them for a few years now and they have been GREAT. The "Old Havana" area offers some good bargins.

Beware of Cubans on the street offering to help you. Most are referred to as Chulos or Jineteros looking to seperate you from your money.  Their help is more than likely going to cost you more than its worth. Make your plans BEFORE you get to Havana.

  3. There are not hostels.

    Try Pototo for casas particulares:
