Anyone who is a sociology major, or knows about this topic please help!?

i was given thse 2 questions an assignment topic in my sociology class, and was wondering if anyone could answer them for me from a sociological perspective, using as little extraneous information as possible.

1. Assuming that the admissions statistic referenced is factully accurate, what is wrong with this statement: "Men and women are finally economic equals, because a majority of admissions into the University of Calgary medical school are now female"?

2.Consider the Hollywood cliche in which a wealthy girl from the "rich" part of town falls in love with a poor boy from "the wrong side of the tracks." With reference to Backman's model of relationships, give three reasons why it rarely happens in real life.

i'm in your class! thanks for asking it!

Liking, Loving, Leaving and Hating: Backman’s Model of Relationships

Stage 1: From “no contact” to “unilateral awareness”

    The key importance of propinquity

    Additional factors

    Cultural restraints

    Familial restraints

    Individual factors (sexuality, disability, etc)

    Stage 2: Sampling and estimation

    Begins with first impressions

Then comes identity bargaining (impression management)

    The comes the compromise process

Prospectives are usually similar in race, age, class, etc.

Prospectives are similar in physical atttractiveness

Normative Constraints can re-emerge at this stage.

    Stage 3: Social Penetration

    Self-disclosure

    Interdependence

    Emotional convergence

Changes in self-attributions: “We” instead of ‘I”

Reinforcement and learning: partners train one another

Stage 4: Relationships are maintained, or relationships dissolve. Why?

    Changes in costs and rewards

Individual: “I am more successful than you now!”

Relational: “We’re bored with one another”

Situational: “I can’t support you financially anymore”

Cultural: “It’s okay for me to work outside the home now!”

    Interpersonal Processes leading to termination

    Reciprocity

    Questioning of motives

    “Going public”

    Unequal involvement

  2. 1. University admissions has nothing to do with economics.  Women would still have to deal with things as simple as salary discrimination and the glass ceiling of promotions to higher-level promotions.  Quantity doesn't equal Quality in terms of employment opportunities.

    2. If I understand Backman correctly, his notion of relationships is one of interpersonal congruency (i.e., similarities).  Reason 1: Socioeconomic differences limit what the two individuals might have in common.  Reason 2: They likely wouldn't be in the same social circles, so wouldn't ever meet in the first place.  Reason 3: The relationship would be incompatible with their existing social circles (i.e., he wouldn't fit in with her crowd; she wouldn't fit in with his).
