Question:

Any opticians or eyesight experts out there???

I have had medium myopia (nearnightedness) since I was around 11 or 12 years old, and my prescription has changed each year by around -0.50 diopters. It is now -5.00 but it has stayed the same for around 14 months now.

Will my vision increase to -7.00 anytime soon as I need to join the army with no larger than -7.00 diopters. I haven;t noticed my glasses changing, perhaps for a mild change when reading text but my vision still remains sharp and clear - not like years ago when I knew I had to change them!

Any advice would be appreciated.

P.S. I AM NOW 20 AND DONT' KNOW WHETHER MY EYES WOULD HAVE STABALISED?

  1. At your age now, your main growth spurt is pretty well done , so it would be highly unlikely that you would change by another 2 dioptres, from - 5.00 to -7.00

There is never any guaranty of course, but it is very very unlikely.

Staying the same the last 14 months is a very good sign.

  2. If your eyesight worsening is a concern for you then you could always look into contacts.  I'm just a piddling average joe with no formal education, but I've got a story for you anyway.  My opthamologist reccomended that I wear contacts because they should hold the eye's shape to some degree, and that way, preserve eyesight.

Ever since I got glasses when I was about eight, my prescription had to be renewed every year.  Currently I wear -11.25 in my left eye and -10.00 or -10.50 in the right.  In 2003, my opthamologist had me fitted for contacts.  I've only had to renew my prescription once since.  Of course, to be totally honest with you, the left lens of my glasses is getting blurry, but only slightly so, and it's been 3 years.  Let me tell you, that's an amazing change compared to having to get my glasses changed out another diopter every freaking year.  Maybe that could work for you too?
