Question:

Any other ARMY college programs?

I plan on going to the Army for college, money and to serve the county. But, I don't want to be sent off or half to live far from my home.

I know about the College First Program in the US National Guard but I can't get any straight answers. Is that a good program? Do they offer what they said is to offer? How long is the training? During training, would I half to live on base? I know about the one weekend out of the month and one or two weeks out of the year. I just want a heads up of what I am getting into.

I don't care about the health exams you half to do to get in. I am worried about if I half to live for training.

Are these any other good programs where I can live at home, go to school, they can help me with school and only a few times actually visit a base? Anything will help!

Also, I am 17. Would that matter? And I need to get my GED. Would I need to get that before I try to enter the college first or can they help me with it?

  1. You can get College First in your contract in the Nat. Guard but I still don't think that guarantees that you won't be deployed while you're in college.  Training for that is the same as any job in the Army, you go to Basic Training at one of 5 Army bases then you do your AIT.  All together it will take at least 3 1/2 months; during that time you'll be living in the barracks on base.  There are no shortcuts there, you would have to go through Basic and AIT just like everyone else.  And yes you do need to get your GED before you can even sign up for the Army.  Spend some time studying for the ASVAB; you have to score at least a 50 in order to get in if you have a GED.
