Question:

Any other Asians who aren't actually *that* offended by the Spanish basketball team?

I'm Asian (Chinese descent) and I actually don't find the Spanish teams' gesture to be that offensive, because what I'm getting from it, is that there is absolutely no ill-will. I don't think they're *making fun* of Asian eyes in the sense of saying our eyes looks ugly or funny, if you know what I mean. I find a lot of other things much more offensive than this. If you're Asian and you find this either offensive or not offensive, please express your view here.

  1. I am glad that I'm not the only Asian (okay..make that half Asian) who wasn't offended.

Its funny that it was my white friends who were really outraged at the picture. Oddly enough, they were also dismayed that I wasn't.

I suspect that everyone is so committed to the game of Moral Outrage and  Victimization that they can't fathom that some of us aren't ready to jump on every possibility to play.

  2. I'm Filipino-Spaniard & I'm not offended at all not because I'm a part-Spaniard but I do understand their gesture. Let me tell you one thing, sometimes Spaniards, juz like the Latino people, are being misinterpreted with their actions since they have their own way of expressing things; very passionate about life & certain things but other people don't seem to understand all of these things. Same thing also apply for Filipinos since majority of the aspect on the culture & customs of the Phils are heavily influenced by the Spaniards.

The one that the Spanish basketball team did was juz an act of symbolism as being part of the Beijing Olympic Athlete. The "slanting eyes" that they did is a symbol that they are in one with the Chinese people in joining the summer olympics but there is no way they intend to hurt the Chinese people. It juz so happens that the Chinese people are well-known by their slanting eyes & that's why the Spanish players did that.  Now if ever the Olympics will be held in another country, they might be using a different prospective in relation to that country.

  4. Sorry, I'm not Asian but if an Asian team came to the games in the U.S. and made their eyes look "round" I really don't think I would be offended. I think you're right, they weren't doing it to offend. It was a simple joke that a lot of people took the wrong way.

  5. I'm Not Asian and I love the picture!
