  1. hmmm, most of the other operating systems besides mac and linux are not for desktop use and are more business oriented. there are many different flavours of linux, so maybe you should try out those. Oh and there is g.ho.st which is an "online operating system" which runs on top of your regular OS (its more of a web service)

  2. Mac OS, Linux (all the various builds), Windows, and Lindows as well as some other way off the beaten path OS's like Redhat all run off the same basic code...which most people refer to as DOS....so it really comes down to personal choice, level of expertise and how much work you want to put in to it yourself. Apple and Microsoft have a slew of programmers doing the work for you, to make "stuff" work.

So as far as labeling them GOOD or not, its up to your own interpretation.

For a system that is user friendly yet capable of being way more than th out of box experience...Unix (its a windows like GUI with a Linux core).....for those that want to create rather then follow solaris or redhat or any number of other systems are going to be better for each person trying to do different things.

So to try to answer your question....good systems like windows?  Yes. good systems that aren't windows?  Yes.  Good systems that run like windows, look like windows, act like windows, are as "simple" to use as windows? Yes, its called Lindows or Linux...but you said we had to exclude linux.

Learning curves are always there, Windows is the "norm"...Linux is the popular alternate and since its open sourced, there's literally thousands of builds so you could find one that works for you....and on and on and on

  3. If you don't want to hear about Mac OS and Linux operating systems, then besides Windows I don't think you will find anything intersting. All other OS's are for professional use such as Sun Solaris, IBM AIX etc... So forget it. Windows or Mac are your two most obvious options. Linux is very good as well but is still too complicated for users with no interest in messing with computers under the hood.
