Question:

Any other landline except BT?

There's a socket in my new house but without any dialing tone. I called BT to reactivate the landline for broadband. However BT told me that there is a landline in my house but it's not from BT and they don't know whose landline it is. The landlord has no idea about this issue. Anyone know how can I find out whose landline it is? Many thanks!

  1. If you are in London it might be a cable line for NTL or Telewest (now Virgin Media). Check the cable providers in your area and phone them.  Alternatively look up your address online and see which number was assigned. That gives you a lead to investigate as the numbers are usually assigned as blocks.

Of course, if the landlord has a forwarding address for the last tenant, you could ask them.

  2. Could it be Virgin(Used to be called NTL)?  We have a BT line and a Virgin line in our house.  0845 840 7777 is the only number I could find for Virgin.

  3. Check the front of the socket to see if there are any small icons. If it has a green symbol it is most likely Virgin, Ntl, Telewest-all the same company. BT sockets will have either the fluteman embossed onto it, a globe symbol, or a T made with dots.
