Any other skeptics see that documentary on national geographic last night?

Called "6 degrees"? I did, and I thought it was terrible. It seemed so biased, and not a lot of it made sense. They talked about hurricane katrina for a large portion of it... but im convinced that cant be used in an arguement, as they already knew any hurricane hitting new orleans could flood it.

I also saw how they mentioned how people grow grapes in great britian now, but they didnt mention that they used to be able to before the LIA, they said it like it is the first time for this.

They also portrayed everywhere as a dry, windy desert... how is that possible if temps go up, causing more evaporation?

They completely disregarded all feedback effects, and did a great job showing video of greenland and antarctica only in the summer time during the hottest periods, never any winter video.

What did all of you other skeptics/deniers think about it, if you happened to waste time watching it?

  1. A killer Hurricane hiting New Oleans was long overdue, the city was totally unprepared and many of their citizens refused to follow the safety requirements.  The worst part is we are spending 50 billion to rebuild the city, and it is nearly as vulnerable as before. The will never be safe with metal frame levees, their only hope is earthen levees, and that requires NO to make the tough decision to refuse to build the houses right next to the levees.  It was a total failure of urban planning.

  2. There is a big difference between being a skeptic and being a under informed programed robot. I actually hope you are correct and it is not a definite thing that may happen. I just refused to close my eyes tightly and plug my ears and shout nanny nanny poo poo until it goes away.

  3. I saw that show and I thought it was eye opening and very unbiased.

    1. Hurricane Katrina was only mentioned in one segment and it was mentioned because of its magnitude. It was previously uncommon for category 5 hurricanes to hit the Gulf and New Orleans never prepared for anything above a category 3. The original discussions about New Orleans immediately after the hurricane hit, if you were paying attention, were about how the wall could not handle more than a category 3 and how the wall needed maintenance to handle a strong category 3.

    2. The grapes grown in England were Champagne grapes. The English could never grow Champagne grapes because they did not have the proper climate for those grapes. If you know anything about wine, certain grapes grow in certain climates. A grape grown in the wrong climate might survive, but will taste strange. Champagne, France became famous because it was the only known climate that created the perfect champagne grape.

    3. The desert or near desert areas of the globe are getting dryer and the show reminded us of the increased numbers of fires created by that drying trend. If you were paying attention, the show mentioned clearly that global warming effects different areas of the globe in different ways.

    4. The researchers on the show interviewed people who live in Greenland and they said that dog sleds do not work anymore. The show also mentioned that the Greenland summer used to only last a couple of months each year.

It is unfortunate that so many people are unwilling to face the changes created by humans on the Earth. We are going to wait until it is too late and then say "What have we done?"

Humans killed so many mammoths that there were so few of them that during a freeze they became extinct. Today, our power plants and our factories put out so much pollution that even being near them is disgusting. Factories can stink for miles around. You cannot tell me that has no effect on the environment.

Automobiles use so much gasoline and we drive so many miles that we create massive volumes of pollution. How can you even think that this does not effect the environment? Eco-systems are very fragile and it does not take much to tip the balance.

All you have to do is to open up your eyes and you will quickly see how much of an effect each one of us has on the environment.

There was a great show about Niagra Falls that showed that four buildings built 300 feet east of the falls actually caused the wind to create a scooping action and bring up enough water to create a large mist on the east side of the falls. If four idle buildings 300 feet away can cause such a change how can factories, power plants and automobiles not cause a much greater change?

    Take care,

  4. New Orleans is a "bowl". It was just a matter of time til a hurricane filled it up. Where do you suppose they pumped all that (Yuk!) "water" to after Katrina? Into the lake, then out the tap faucets, I suppose!

Greenland's info was on another show last year. The glacial ice riding along on a layer of water is something they just figured out. It was probably doing that all along. Maybe a little slower, that's all.

Someday they will figure out that Antarctica has a giant spring under its middle where its glacier is in constant supply of water freezing and pushing out towards its edges and breaking off into the sea.

As for me, I am getting ready for the ice age that is coming up by buying up all the west coast land in Florida and selling it to the people who are getting ready for the global warming. (When I win the lottery, that is.) I'll be laughing all the way to the bank when their "waterfront" property becomes 300 miles from the coast. Ha!

  5. I saw less than 6 min of it and couldn't stand to watch more than that.   I often wonder how that kind of garbage can make it on the air!

  6. National Geographic...... as with the Gore-ites..... get attention and $$$$$ by scaring people.  How many people are going to tune in (which means advertising $$$) for a program that says that on the whole.....we're in pretty good shape?  Good news won't sell advertising or get research grants!

  7. I watched a bit of it but it was very boring.  I found that it was one cliche after another.  I forced myself to watch and I tried to remain open to their claims but it was rediculous and annoying.  Their arguments belonged in a 5th grade debate class and they would have lost.

  8. TV sells airtime to make money.  Just because it's on TV by national geographic doesn't make global warming any more true than the UFO reports on the History channel make UFO a fact.

Global warming is entertainment, not science.

  9. It's understandable that it didn't make sense to you. Subconsciously, you don't want it to make sense. If your side had any credibility whatsoever, I'm sure National Geographic or the Discovery Channel (and many others) would have many programs detailing the skeptics/deniers views. It's not difficult to see why they don't. Credibility and that science is not on the skeptics/deniers side!

EDIT - I chuckle every time I see a "thumbs down." You're preaching to your tiny choir on YA, but National Geographic has a worldwide audience and they are advancing mainstream science.

EDIT 2 - I saw the solar documentary too, but even in there the scientists and NG advanced the theory of AGW, but you only heard what you wanted to hear. Watch it again if you don't believe me.

  10. Yes I saw it and it made me want to shoot the TV. I thought it was quite entertaining and as I watched it, I thought to my self, I bet the Global Warming believers are going to eat this c**p right up. Like the Inconvenient Lie, it was so blown out of proportion and like you said, so bias.
