The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under their Authority;--to all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls;--to all Cases of admiralty and maritime Jurisdiction;--to Controversies to which the United States shall be a Party;--to Controversies between two or more States;--between a State and Citizens of another State;--between Citizens of different States;--between Citizens of the same State claiming Lands under Grants of different States, and between a State, or the Citizens thereof, and foreign States, Citizens or Subjects.

I am trying to do my assignment, but majority of these words are pretty stale. And using a different word would change the meaning. Any help?

  1. I'd just stick with the words themselves. As you said, changing the word would change the meaning - and that's something you definitely want to avoid. Sorry about that.

  2. Basically, the federal courts may hear a case if:

    1) it involves the Constitution, federal law, or a treaty;

    2) an ambassador, diplomat, or consul is one of the parties;

    3) it involves navigation or shipping in territorial waters;

    4) the U.S. is one of the parties;

    5) one state is suing another;

    6) citizens from one state are suing another state;

    7) the parties are from different states;

    8) it is a boundary dispute between citizens of the same state; or

    9) a foreign country (or foreign citizens) is suing a state (or its citizens) - or vice versa.

    Hope this helps.
