  1. If you were a German you would do so.

The Romans did the same. Patria was their word for their homeland and it derives from their word for father, pater. So they said about their soldiers:

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori. "It is a sweet and seemly thing to die for your country."

  2. In response to the answer above - countries are not exclusively female - here's a list of countries that are refered to by their people as "fatherland":

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatherland

    There you go.

  3. Some people say Fatherland, but the Germans used to refer to the Vaterland during World War 2, so it now has n**i connotations and people tend to avoid it.

  4. Adolf Hitler called Germany, "Fatherland"!

One of the songs/Anthems of the hitler Youth Movement was, "Oh, Fatherland, Fatherland give us a Sign"!

    (Just a bit of Trivia)

As for most all other Countries they Refer to their Country as "Motherland"! (Constantly Nurturing and giving birth to more People)

  5. Norwegian call  their country fatherland.

  6. i think most countries are female... so are boats and ships

  7. mwahaha!!

coz females will take over the world!lmao

  8. I know it makes no sense in English, but countries are female.

  9. Maybe it's because motherland means that's where you come from..like your mother..

You come from your mother :)
