Question:

Any plumbers out there?

We are house hunting and have found a gorgeous house built in 1972. Someone has told my husband that the pipes in the house need to be replaced even without seeing the pipes. They are copper pipes and the owners have had no problems with it. They have scared him off from buying it because of the old pipes. I have been told by others that there is no issue with having to replace copper pipes after so many years . What's the truth.

  1. Bert,

I'm not a plumber but I've been around home repairs for many years.  It has always been my understanding that copper pipes were the best.

If you really like the house, I would get a friend or hire a real plumber to check the plumbing out for you before buying.  That's if you are really interested in it and can afford it.

He'll be checking mostly the joints for any leaks and/or corrosion.

  2. i have a house built in the 70's i doubt i will replace the plumbing soon.............tom

  3. check the pipes where ever visable if you see any parts of the system with a greenish-white corroshion on them it indicates a leak or corroded spot in the pipe these should be replaced 9this usually appears at fitting joints and is not a major repair if the pipe has atan or brown tint to it chances are it is fine and will last for a long time

  4. Our house was built in 1956, with copper pipes. They has never been a problem with them. You shouldn't have any trouble with those copper pipes, either.
