Any point in trying to save a damaged bradford pear tree?

It's raining nice & steadily here in Charleston SC and almost a third of my bradford Pear just fell. After doing some research it seems this is a common problem with Bradford Pears aover 15 years old. Is there any point trying to save it & if not what would be a good sturdy, fast growing replacement?

  1. I have seen Bradford Pears recover after a storm or bad pruning job, so it is worth giving it a year or 2 to try to recover,

if the breakage did not hit the core of the trunk.  Bradfor pears need annual pruning to make them open enough for wind to pass through.  We have a huge one out front that we

prune frequently.  We also lost 2 in the backyard after repeated breakage during wind storms.  We replaced them with Cleveland Pears.  They are similar, but have a more rounded shape, and are supposed to break less.  We just planted them, so I don't know from personal experience with this variety.

    Good Luck!

  2. no the cultivar 'Aristocrat' is a perfect replacement
