Any rabbit experts? I need your experience!?

I have a male tan rabbit that i've had for a couple of years, He's verry muscular and limber, so we suspect he's a hare. He lives in a 3 foot long basic cage with just a bottom and a top. In his cage he has a litter box, a food bowl, a water bottle, a few toys, and that's it. I let him run around my room every day for awhile but he just hides under my bed.

He seems like he has such a boring life, he spends his time just sitting in his cage or under his bed.

So my question is, is there a way i can improve his quality of life? I love him very much and want him to have the best life he can.

I want to know if a (spayed) female or another male rabbit would help, he seems a little lonely and i'd be willing to do that if that'd help.

I also want to know if there are any bigger, more interesting cages that he can live in (preferably under $150)

Hershey and i would be so grateful for any help!

  1. Have you thought about getting him a rabbit leash? Then you can take him outiside. Two males rarely go well together so a spayed female would be the best choice, but if I understand correctly, people rarely neuter their rabbits though, so you might have to get it to a vet yourself. (A guinea pig is also a good choice. From experience, they go better together with rabbits than other rabbits. And you won't have to think about gender)

Edit: After some thought and remembering, I would definitely advice you to get a guinea pig as a companion instead of a rabbit.

  2. The cage you've got isn't big enough for him, and it's definitely not going to be big enough for two rabbits if you decide to adopt him a friend.

I would recommend building him a MUCH larger cage, like from this page:

    http://www.geocities.com/cottonlove1965/...

Or buying an exercise pen intended for dogs.

Make sure he also has plenty of toys to play with.  Phone books are a big hit for shredding, boxes for chewing, and plastic baby toys for throwing around.  You can also check out online retailers like Busy Bunny (http://www.busybunny.com/) or other similar places.

Finally, if you do adopt a friend, your rabbit must be neutered.  Even if his potential cagemate is spayed, it's incredibly difficult to pair two rabbits that are not both fixed and it may lead to fights.

  3. try and change things around like get some old boxes and make an area for him to run around in

(e.g:two big boxes joined with a long tube like box)

or moves things around so he can jump up on things just try and change the things you do with and you also have the right idea in getting him a new cage.

  4. I don't know about the cage (I really don't know what cage) but about getting another rabbit, definitely. A female (spayed) preferably, since males tend to fight.

    Hope I helped!

  5. Your rabbit is so cute!

But you should def. get a bigger cage. If your budget is 150 you could get a much larger cage at petsmart, walmart, or petco. And a hiding box for all rabbits is very important. He prob. hides under ur bed because he doesn't have a place of his own to hide in. He might feel a little uneasy. Rabbits are shy by nature.

And for letting him explore, let him out ur whole house! The recommended time to let him out is about one in a half to three hours a day.

Another way to bond with your rabbit is by allow him to get use to your touch and smell so just once in a while pet him and reach out ur hand so he gets to know you. Also grooming is said to be a bonding experience. Petting your pet, clipping his toenails and combing him will all make him have a much more happier day.

You could get another rabbit but it might be costly and they might not get along!

    Good Luck!
