I have a 2 female domestic long hairs, 2 years old. Treated for UTI about 2 months ago now recurred. Peeing out of the box is their main symptom . Took them to the vet and they both had fevers, they are on antibiotics again. Vet says next time they should be taken off the raw food, I am very reluctant to do this. They do not eat any dry food, the 2 litter boxes are very clean and there have been no changes in the household. Anyone ever heard of bacteria in raw food causing a UTI? they are on a balanced raw diet specifically designed for cats, I dont just hand them chunks of raw meat

  1. Adding a small amount of apple cider vinegar to their water can help. Start with a very small amount like 1/4 tsp and work up to about 1-1/2 tablespoons. You will have to change it daily. Also, you can buy some Sovereign Silver. You can give a small amount daily for immune health and hourly during infections. Only this brand b/c it has been found safer and more effective. However, sometimes UTIs are misdiagnosed for kidney stones which can require surgery. If the problem persists request an ultrasound.

  2. I think it would be a good idea to follow your vet's advice.

    Good Luck!

  3. Hi Tiare... I cannot say for certain if a raw fed diet would likely be the cause for the UTI, rather it would more likely cause bowel disturbances.  If the urine pH is too alkaline this would cause a UTI and this generally happens when the diet doesn't provide adequate hydration.

Our cats are fed raw, however we have one cat who has feline idiopathic cystitis  (FIC).  Supplementing the raw diet with a premium can food has eliminated the FIC.  Each cat receives 1/2 of a 5.5 oz can.  We add 25% water of 5.5 oz can to their served portion to increase the moisture intake.  It took 6 months before we eliminated the recurrence and have maintained this diet.
