  1. Curtain brackets -- ugh!  What should be an easy task is made needlessly difficult because of crappy hardware and lack of a drilling template.

To install the barbed white (or blue) plastic anchors, determine the location of the bracket and use pencil, nail, etc, to mark the location of the s***w holes.  Then drill a hole slightly smaller than the anchor, so that it takes a tap of the hammer to seat it -- if it pops in easily, it will just spin when you put the s***w in.  Once both the anchors are in place, put the bracket in place and start the screws.  I find it's easier to start the screws with the bracket pulled away from the wall, so I can see the tip of the s***w and the anchor.  Get one started a few turns, start the second, and then s***w them in till snug.  DON"T overtighten, or the anchor will break loose of the drywall.

  2. A stud finder helps. To help you find... studs... for s******g into.

Wait, that doesn't quite work... or does it? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

More often then not, the window will have a header that extends either side of it - that is, a 8 to 12" solid piece that acts as a support for the roof in place of the missing studs where the window opening is. So there's usually something solid to s***w a curtain rod bracket into.

  3. just a few points for you-a stud detector is no good to you here-they are basically metal detectors that detect nails/screws in plasterboard which is where the studs are-however, as youre near a corner (head of window reveal) this will detect the plasterers metal corner bead and is therefore of no use. im not sure if its masonry or plasterboard so here goes....if its masonry (conc. block) then use wallplugs as you mentioned. if its timber frame you can s***w woodscrews straight in as youll have timber to fix into all around the window. however, if its dry lined (block wall with plasterboard glued to it) buy some drywall fixings (worms) these can be used with only a hand screwdriver and are simple.any provider will stock them.

  4. If you're hanging curtains over the windows, then you're in luck. Because there are always studs running down each side of the window. At least one and often two joined together. If this doesn't work, then I think you're screwed.

And btw, the white/blue thingies - called anchors - are only needed when the screws are being held by drywall, rather than being screwed directly into the studs.

  5. Screws you must turn to install. The other kind of s***w, no turning needed. Straight in like a nail.

  6. Take a hammer and tap on the wall you will hear the diff from hollow to hitting the stud.the stud is the wood behind the wall.Take the s***w hold in one hand slowly take a s***w driver and turn it to the right to tighten turn to the left to loosen.hope this helps.geo

  7. s***w a s***w through the plaster remove the s***w then insert the "plastic thing" tap it in with a hammer then s***w your s***w in and it will be anchored.

you can also punch a hole in plaster with a nail to get it started.
