Any recent stories where humans turned into savages?

Are there any recent events where survival instinct kicked in for plane crash survivors etc. that made them turn into savages (cannibalism, etc)

Yes as a matter of fact , there was a case only the other evening in Manchester. A crowd of  scottish football hooligans went overboard and turned the place into a disaster area in the space of about an hour.

I don't know about canabalism as of yet but these presidential primaries can be savage.

There was a recent case in Austria about a woman whose father kept her in a dungeon, raping her repeatedly for over 24 years. She had six children through the abuse between the ages of 5 and 20. These children had no real contact with civilized human life, and communicated with each other not by speaking, but by grunting and growling at each other. The woman, age 35, had also degenerated severely due to her mental state.

People don't "turn into savages." All of the actions that a person takes are part of a long chain of actions and reactions that make up that person's life. By studying the events and conditions surrounding  these actions, we are more able to study the whole of human behavior, as well as the impact of cultural factors on people.

I think that to dismiss an act of, say, cannibalism as someone losing their civilized instincts and going savage is not necessarily responsible anthropology. We live in our culture. We don't get more or less "cultured" depending on the circumstances. We might find it easier or harder to break social taboos or conventions, but that's not the same thing.

Besides, the term "savage" has a long and storied history, especially in the realm of anthropology. It's just better not to go around calling behavior savage.
